| The
2004 Kettleers Gave Everything They Had
In
his first Cape League stint since taking the Wareham Gatemen
to the 2000 Divisional Series, newly returned head coach
Mike Roberts was put to the test when he started watching
his multitalented ballplayers fall like flies due to injuries.
Compounded with the unexpected departure of players like
catcher Brett Hayes to Team USA, the loss of players like
Justin Maxwell in early July, Chase Headley with 10 games
remaining at season's end and a number of other bumps and
bruises, Roberts' goal of once again heading to the playoffs
was cut short.
Regardless, his boys kept charging onward
and had one last chance to snag second place and a playoff
spot when they went to Hyannis to play the crosstown rival
Mets on August 8, the last day of the regular season. In
a game that bore a playoff-like atmosphere, Cotuit took
it to 11 innings, but fell just shy when Mike Costanzo belted
one off the wall to win it. Nevertheless, Cotuit led the
league in stolen bases in 2004 and boasted one of only seven
hitters to finish over .300 (LSU's Bryan Harris at .308).
