Tennessee Pitcher Brings Both Heat and Compassion

April 12 , 2004

The University of Tennessee recently announced that Luke Hochevar has been selected as its Coca-Cola Community All-American for his excellence in community service. The Coca-Cola Community All-Americans program recognizes student-athletes who are making a difference in their communities.

"We are extremely proud of all our student-athletes and the tremendous commitments they've made to this institution and our community through their community service efforts," said Mike Hamilton, men's athletic director. "In addition to bringing national attention to the issues of volunteerism and community involvement, the Coca-Cola Community All-Americans program provides a platform for colleges and universities to honor and recognize student-athletes, like Luke, for their outstanding contributions to the communities in which they live, learn, work and play."

Hochevar distinguished himself by serving the community in many diverse organizations. The sophomore baseball player has been active in service with Norwood Elementary School as part of the "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" literacy event and the MDA's Muscle Team Dinner. He has also read to kids at Sarah Moore Green Elementary and Farragut Intermediate School, visited patients at East Tennessee Children's Hospital, participated in the Salvation Army Stuff-a-Stocking program, served as a finish line greeter at the Buddy's Race Against Cancer, spoke to a local DECA group, signed autographs for children at VASF Day and worked with his team gathering a donation to the Mission of Hope. Hochevar has been a first-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was named as the co-winner of the 2003 CHAMPS/Lifeskills Male Community Service Athlete of the Year and to the 2003 SEC Good Works team.

"I really like to get out into the community and give back. I realize that I can serve as a positive role model to the youth in the community," Hochevar said. "My father was very important to my growth as a person. He showed me how significant a positive influence can mean to today's youth. I want to continue to share my time with local children's organizations."

As a Coca-Cola Community All-American, Hochevar will be the University of Tennessee's nominee at the national level. A panel of representatives from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) will select six student-athletes from NCAA®, NAIATM and Junior/Community College member institutions as national Coca-Cola Community All-Americans. The final Coca-Cola Community All-Americans and their institutions will be recognized this summer at the annual NACDA Convention. Additionally, the six national Coca-Cola Community All-Americans will receive an award and Coca-Cola will make a $5,000 donation to the community/philanthropic cause of their choice. The Cola-Cola Company teamed with NACDA to recognize community service in intercollegiate athletics.
