MIKE ROBERTS • FIELD MANAGER
Coach
Roberts returns to Cotuit for his second season in 2005,
on the heels of a respectable 20-23-1, third place finish
in the Western Division in 2004. Finishing just one win
behind second place Hyannis, Roberts' 2004 squad held things
together and made a late-season bid for the playoffs after
a midseason slump. Roberts' team led the Cape League in
stolen bases in 2004 (75). Roberts has also been the field
manager for the Wareham Gatemen (1984 and 2000).
He returns this year with this special
statement to the Kettleers family, "I have personally
dedicated the 2005 Cape League Season to my father, Edd
Roberts, who passed away at 93 years of age in March, 2005.
My father taught me to respect the game of baseball, players,
fans, and media; practice through repetition, and more repetition
to become a polished player; love the smell of the grass
as each season begins, and use a back yard mentality of
clean, but aggressive play."
From 1976 through 1998, Roberts was the
head coach at the University of North Carolina. From the
UNC Tarheels, Roberts went onto UNC-Asheville, where he
coached two seasons (1999-2000). All totalled, Roberts'
teams have made nine NCAA postseason appearances and two
College World Series appearances.
His teams have also had a strong history
of being tops amid their ACC peers, five times capturing
the ACC Regular Season Championship and four times the ACC
Tournament Championship. Eight of Roberts' former players
have been first round draft picks in the annual Major League
Baseball First Year Player Draft. Fifteen of his former
players have played in Major League Baseball.
His lifetime collegiate coaching record
is 850-450-3.
Prior to managing Wareham to the Western
Division regular season title in 2000, Roberts had led Wareham
to the same title in 1984. Each of those two seasons, Roberts'
Cape League teams led the entire league in stolen bases.
In 2000, Roberts' Wareham team tied the Cape League all-time
single season stolen base record. |
