Tennessee's Luke Hochevar Tosses Early Gem

Vols Open Season With Shutout Win on Pitcher's no-hit innings

Feb. 13, 2004

Knoxville, Tenn. - Luke Hochevar tossed seven no-hit innings and Brian Cleveland drove in four runs as the Tennessee Volunteers opened the 2004 season with an 11-0 shutout victory over the visiting Morehead State Eagles at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Hochevar (1-0), who threw 85 pitches, in his first start of the season struck out a career-high tying 10 while issuing just one walk in facing the minimum 21 batters.

Morehead State (0-1) was limited to one hit, a Zac Carr single in the eighth off reliever Patrick Hicklen. Hicklen was making his first appearance since Apr. 13, 2002, after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery.
Tennessee (1-0) jumped out a 4-0 lead in the first thanks to a two-run single by newcome Chris Kemp, an RBI ground out by Nick Crowe and the second Eagle error of the inning.

The Vols pounded out 15 hits, including a pair of three-hit efforts by Josh Alley and Eric King who each drove in a run. Cleveland, Crowe and Eli Iorg each collected a pair of hit.

Michael Rivers provided the first long ball of the day leading off the fourth, while Cleveland connected with a three-run shot in the seventh to make it 10-0. Alley's capped the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth.

Lance Johnston (0-1) took the loss in four innings
