Erick Threets, an 18 year old southpaw
out of Modesto Junior College, was drafted by the San Franciso Giants in the seventh round
of the Major League Baseball draft this year. He was the 211 pick overall. He ranks having
the opportunity to pitch in front of the Giants at the new Pac Bell Park as one of the
highlights in his young career.
On the mound for the Kettleers, Threets has posted a 4.91 ERA, striking
out 12 while walking eight in seven and one third innings of relief. In a recent
appearance against Orleans, Threets went two innings without allowing a hit or a walk,
while striking out four.
The Livermore, California native hopes for a career in the big leagues,
but at 18 he knows he still has time to make things happen. His ability has attracted not
only major league scouts, but those from larger colleges viewing Threets as a valuable
transfer into their programs. College World Series Champion Louisiana State University has
Threets high on its list, having recently sent a scout from Baton Rouge to see him
pitch at Lowell Park.
You were drafted by the San Francisco Giants this spring, but
didnt sign. Why?
They offered me what they felt was right for the round in which I was
drafted, but it didnt meet my expectations. I know I can do better. I only pitcher
17 innings as a closer last season. Next year Ill be a starter and have more of a
chance to pitch.
How many different pitches do you throw?
Three. A fastball, change-up and slider.
What is your best pitch?
My fastball. It has movement and I throw it at about 93 mph.
If you could change one thing about baseball, what would it be?
Id take away all the pads that hitter wear. It gives them extra
inches to be hit. Its hard to come inside when they crowd the plate.
Who was your sports hero when you where young?
Dave Stewart. I tried to mimic him. I also like Armando Benitez and
Mike Jackson.
What is the best baseball advice anyone has ever given you?
My parents always told me to just go out and have fun, just do your
thing. I call them back in California a lot. They help me to focus on my game.
What is your impression of the Cape League?
Its a beautiful place. The competition level is way up there.
Coming from a junior college to here is a big difference. Playing here helps me know where
I stand.
Do you have a favorite baseball memory?
When I was really young my brother and I would play baseball in a park
across the street from our house. Sometimes wed play three games a day. We made our
own jerseys and played all day.
What do you hope the future holds for you in baseball?
I want to be the best pitcher I can be.
