Career, Scholastic and Collegiate Highlights: OU freshman
reliever Garrett Richards was among forty players named to the
midseason watch list for the third annual National Collegiate
Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, the
association announced on April 19, 2007. The award will be given to
the top relief pitcher in Division I college baseball. Richards is
tied for first in the Big 12 with nine saves. That mark already
ranks in a tie for fourth place at OU for a single season and its
tied for fifth best in a career by a Sooner. In his 19 appearances,
Richards (1-0) has struck out 18 batters over 19 1/3 innings
pitched. In the series finale against Texas A&M, he tossed a
career-high 4 2/3 to record his first career victory. With nine
saves and one win, Richards has figured into 40 percent of the
Sooners victories this season. In high school, Garrett was named
to the 2006 All-Edmond first team.
