2008: Freshman All-America (Collegiate Baseball, Second Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers)... All-NCAA Houston Regional... Conference USA All-Freshman Team... Houston College Classic All-Tournament Team... All-Silver Glove Trophy Series Team... C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll... Burst on the Division I scene... Starting shortstop for the nationally-ranked Owls in all but three games... Rice lost two of the three games he missed... Team's top hitter at home at Reckling Park, hitting .400 (48-of-120) with a .642 slugging percentage... Batted a steady .348 for the full season, .346 against quality teams that advanced to NCAA Regionals, and .341 in Conference USA... Hit .379 in the NCAA Tournament, including .375 (3-for-8) with two RBI and a sacrifice bunt at the College World Series... Led the team and was among the best in the conference in slugging (.549) and total bases (128)... Shared the team lead in doubles (19) and was third in home runs (8) and RBI (54)... Maintained a 17-game hitting streak, the Owls' third-longest streak of the season... Collected two or more hits in a game 27 times, with a season-high three hits four different times... Slugged two doubles in a game five different times, including four against ranked opponents (East Carolina, Long Beach State, Texas and Tulane)... Shared the team lead in multi-RBI games (16)... Drove in a career-best six runs on the strength of a two-homer night against Winthrop, including a grand slam... Blasted a clutch home run with two out in the eighth inning to tie the middle game of the Tulane series... Hit a critical homer in his second-to-last at bat for an eventual 7-6 win in the finale of the UCF series... Helped punch the Owls' ticket to Omaha in the final game of the Super Regional, collecting three hits with a double to drive in four runs... Went 5-for-13 (.385) with a double, triple, hit by pitch, stolen base and three runs scored in the Regional... Solid defensive shortstop who turned or started 44 of the Owls' 63 double plays... Exceptional on defense the second half of the season.
