At Stanford: Emerged as one of college baseball's premier
closers during a stellar freshman campaign...became the seventh
Stanford player, and fourth pitcher, to earn Freshman All-America
status...was a first-team freshman All-America selection by
Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger, a second-team honoree by
Rivals.com and a third-team selection by Ping!Baseball...also earned
first-team All-Pac-10 recognition after recording eight saves, which
tied for the seventh-highest single-season total in Stanford
history...became the fourth freshman to crack the single-season
top-10 list...was asked to adapt to a bullpen role on The Farm after
working as a starter throughout high school, and adjusted very
well...does not get rattled and is intensely competitive, giving him
the perfect closer's makeup...has a devastating slider and a low 90s
fastball...also developed a changeup during fall, where he worked as
a starter to further enhance all three pitches...throws a lot of
strikes, and attacks the hitter...was selected by the New York
Yankees in the 34th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft,
but did not sign a professional contract.
As a Freshman in 2008: Fashioned an outstanding rookie
campaign, earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors and a spot on three
freshman All-American teams...led the staff with a Pac-10
freshman-high 31 outings (all in relief), going 5-3 with a club-best
eight saves and a 3.51 ERA (22er, 56.1ip)...save total is tied for
the seventh-highest on Stanford's single-season list, while the
appearances are tied for fifth...followed 2008 MLB first-round draft
choice Jeremy Bleich (2006) among a host of Cardinal freshman to
lead the team in saves...ranked fourth in the Pac-10 for saves
(second among freshman), tied for fifth in appearances and tied for
second by finishing 20 games...logged a 3.3:1 strikeout-to-walk
ratio, with 50 strikeouts against only 15 walks...held opposing
batters to a .257 average (53-for-206)...was extremely tough on
right-handed batters, yielding just 25 hits in 109 at-bats
(.229)...ranked second on the Cardinal staff for strikeouts, fifth
for innings pitched and fourth for wins...was not a prototypical
closer in that he often pitched more than just the final inning...22
of his 31 outings were of at least 1.1 innings, while he pitched
between 2.0-3.0 innings eight times, between 3.0-4.0 frames twice,
and more than 4.0 innings on three occasions...set his career high
with 5.0 innings of two-hit, shutout relief May 18 at Arizona
(1bb,2so)...made his collegiate debut with a 4.0-inning relief
appearance February 25 vs. Saint Mary's (5h,3r,3er,2bb,2so)...earned
his first save with 2.1 scoreless innings March 1 vs. Cal State
Fullerton (1h,0bb,1so)...picked up his initial win March 8 at Texas
after working 3.2 shutout frames (3h,1bb,4so)...tied for second
among Pac-10 pitchers with three saves in conference play, just one
behind the co-leaders...posted a 2.75 ERA (6er, 19.2ip) and a .225
average against (16-for-71) in 11 Pac-10 outings...led Stanford in
postseason wins, going 3-0 with two saves and a 5.68 ERA (8er,
12.2ip) in seven games...earned wins in his two Regional
appearances, including his playoff debut June 1 vs. UC Davis
(2.0ip,3h,0r,0bb,1so)...worked 4.0 innings of the Cardinal's
Regional championship game victory over Pepperdine, allowing two
runs on three hits (1bb,2so)...saved both games of the Super
Regional at Cal State Fullerton, working a combined 2.0 shutout
frames (0h,1b,1so)...was also the winning pitcher in Stanford's
victory over Florida State in the College World Series
(2.0ip,3h,3r,3er,1bb,3so).
Other Amateur Baseball: Served as closer for the Cotuit
Kettleers in the 2008 Cape Cod League...went 1-2 with five saves and
a 2.76 ERA (5er, 16.1ip) in 13 relief appearances...held opposing
batters to a paltry .200 average (12-for-60), with 15 strikeouts
against five walks...recorded a pair of saves over three playoff
outings...played seven summers for the Indiana Bulls
(2001-07)...participated in the 2007 Indiana Mr. Baseball
Classic...hit .500 while also posting an 0.41 ERA with 99 strikeouts
in 51.0 innings during the summer of 2006...helped his team win the
2002 NABF national title and finish as the CABA national
runner-up...participated in the 2006 East Coast Professional
Showcase and was named a Top 20 Prospect at the 2006 West Coast Area
Code Games.
Personal Information: Son of Mark and Pam Storen...was
born in Indianapolis, Ind....has one sister, Lindsay...chose
Stanford because, in his words, of "the unmatched mix of
athletic and academic accomplishments"...collects hats and
bobbleheads...patterns his game after New York Mets closer Francisco
Rodriguez...gifted artist, who enjoys drawing...has spent parts of
recent summers umpiring Little League Baseball...undeclared major.
