(FRESHMAN): An honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by
the league's coaches ... second on the team with a 6-2 record and a
4.11 ERA ... made 19 appearances, starting 10, and punching out 76
batters in 76.2 innings of work ... picked up victory in A&M's
Big 12 Tourney finale against Texas Tech (May 22) ... held the Red
Raiders to three earned runs over 5.1 innings, punching out five ...
suffered loss at No. 13 Oklahoma on May 16 (5.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER,
1 BB, 4 K) ... won Big 12 Pitcher of the week honors after dominant
start at No. 7 Texas (May 9) ... tossed A&M's first
complete-game nine-inning shutout in five years (9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0
BB, 9 K) ... it was also the first time A&M blanked Texas on the
diamond since 1979 ... threw just 105 pitches, allowed one runner to
second base (on an error) and went to a three-ball count one time
(faced three over the minimum on the day) ... along with Big 12
honors was named to College Baseball Foundation's National All-Star
Lineup ... fanned a career-best 10 over 6.2 innings of work against
Oklahoma State (April 25) ... earned first Big 12 win vs Nebraska
(April 18...5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K) ... first Big 12 start came
in series finale at K-State (April 11)...did not allow a hit until
the fifth inning, and gave up four hits and two runs over 6 1/3
innings of work (no decision) ... other starts came Feb. 24 against
Centenary (W, 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K) ... and March 4 vs Stephen
F. Austin (W, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K) ... gave the Aggies strong
relief outings at Baylor (March 16), at Missouri (March 22) and at
Texas Tech (April 5) ... picked up two holds in series sweep of
Kansas ... retired first 11 Mizzou batters faced in comeback win
over Tigers in Columbia (March 22).
AT BARBERS HILL HIGH SCHOOL: Played four seasons
for coach Gil Stalbaum at Barbers Hill High School (Mont Belvieu,
Texas) ... a three-time all-district and all-state selection ...
helped the Eagles to the playoffs all four seasons ... went 9-2 with
a 1.30 ERA as a senior (2008), striking out 146 batters en route to
District Most Valuable Player honors ... also launched eight home
runs while hitting .456 ... paced the Eagles to a regional semifinal
appearance as a junior (2007) ... hit .395 while going 12-2 with a
1.05 ERA and 138 punchouts ... is the first Barbers Hill baseball
player to play at a major Division I school ... played summer ball
for the Texas Sun Devils.
PERSONAL: Ross Wesley Hales is the son of Billy
and Beverly Hales of Baytown ... born March 12, 1990 in Houston ...
plans to pursue a degree in sport management ... has an older
brother, Cody (A&M Class of '09) ... mother, Beverly, played
basketball at Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) ...
enjoys playing basketball, golfing, hunting and fishing in his spare
time ... career goal is to play professional baseball and/or own a
sporting goods store.
