The Bears' top pitching prospect in 2009, who first developed
into Cal's closer, and then became the Bears' No. 1 starter as a
fresh-man...threw a complete game against USC in his last outing of
2009...a right-hander who throws in the low 90s with a curveball and
change-up...excelled in the Northwoods League this past summer and
was named the sixth-top prospect by Baseball Amer-ica...finished 4-2
with a 2.61 ERA, and 49 strikeouts in 59.0 innings as a starter for
the Alexandria (Minn.) Beetles...
AS A FRESHMAN (2009): Was 3-6 with a 4.41 ERA and four saves (9th
in Pac-10) in 19 appearances and nine starts...had 55 strikeouts in
67.1 innings...suffered the loss but threw a complete game May 22
versus USC (nine hits, four runs, no walks, four strikeouts)...got
no decision May 8 at UCLA (6.0 innings, six hits, no earned runs,
four walks, three strikeouts)...lost April 24 start versus Arizona
State (7.1 innings, seven hits, three runs, five walks, career-high
seven strikeouts)...won April 17 start versus Oregon (8.0 innings,
six hits, one run, one walk, six strikeouts)...lost April 11 start
at Washington (5.2 innings, six hits, four runs, one walk, five
strikeouts)...got no decision in April 5 start at Oregon State (4.0
innings, six hits, two earned runs, three walks, three
strikeouts)...won in start March 29 versus Washington State (6.0
innings, six hits, one earned run, no walks, four
strikeouts)...earned save March 4 versus San Francisco (1.0 inning,
one walk)...earned two saves Feb. 27-28 at Long Beach State
(combined 2.1 innings, two hits, no runs, one walk, three
strikeouts)...earned save Feb. 23 versus Vanderbilt (1.1 innings, no
hits, no runs, one walk, three strikeouts)...earned save in Feb. 20
season-opener versus UC Riverside (1.1 innings, no hits, no runs,
one strikeout)...
HIGH SCHOOL/PERSONAL: At Los Altos High School was a three-time
all-state selection, as well as all-league and All-Central Coast
Section...as a senior was 9-3 with 113 strikeouts...as a junior was
8-1 with a 1.58 ERA, and had 77 strikeouts in 66.1 innings...helped
lead his team to the 2007 Central Coast Section Division II
title...undeclared major...parents are Roy Johnson and Margaret-Diggle
