COTUIT, MA - A sixth inning exlposion on the part of the Cotuit
Kettleers powered them past the Brewster Whitecaps as the Kettleers
won their second in a row by a score of 5-0.
Again, the Cotuit pitchers were excellent, but on this occasion,
their work was overshadowed by the bats of the Kettleers.
Both starting pitchers gave their teams five strong innings, neither
allowing a single run to score, but while the relievers of the Kettleers
were able to continue to contain the Whitecaps attack, the same
couldn't be said of the relievers for Brewster.
Heath Rollins (Winthrop, 1 K, 1 BB)
performed very strong in the five innings he pitched for the Whitecaps,
but as soon as he departed, the attack of the Kettleers heated up.
Facing Will Savage (Oklahoma, 2 Ks, 1 BB), the losing pitcher, in
the bottom of the sixth inning, the Kettleers were able to score
two earned runs off of him and five runs in total, which would be
all that was needed for the victory. Savage loaded the bases
with no outs and then had to face Todd Davidson (Delaware, 1 for
3 batting, 2 RBI), who was third in the league entering the game
with 6 RBI. Davidson came through yet again as he doubled
in the first two runs of the game.
Later in the inning, with two outs and runners on second and third,
Michael Hollander (LSU, 2 for 4 batting, 2 RBI) came to the plate.
Hollander hadn't recorded a single RBI in the three game he had
previously played in, but this streak ended when he singled in two
more runs for the Kettleers for his first RBI of the season.
Sean Gastan (Notre Dame, 2 for 4 batting, 1 RBI), who didn't have
hit before this game, then added the final run when he singled to
bring home Hollander, who had stolen second base.
Tim Ladd (Georgia Tech, 2 Ks, O BB)
didn't struggle at all in the four innings of relief that he pitched
for the Kettleers, and as a result, he picked up his first win of
the season. Brewster only managed to record five hits against
the combined pitching of Charles Blackman (Young Harris, 7 Ks, 3
BBs) and Ladd, which ultimately doomed Brewster. The Whitecaps
left eight men on base, and because of their inability to do anything
with pitching of the Kettleers, they ended up losing the game.
With the win, Cotuit evened the season
series with Brewster at 1-1.
The Kettleers now have a day off before they
face Wareham at home on friday and hopefully, they will continue
their winning ways.
