Seth Blair Tabbed Coca Cola Cape League Pitcher of the Week After One-Hit, Complete-Game Gem
Blair had everything working on Wednesday as he pitched Cotuit to a 4-0, one-hit, complete-game shutout of Harwich. He retired the Mariners in order in eight of nine innings, but had to work out of a jam in the second when a hit batter and a single put runners at first and third with two outs. Blair plunked Tommy Medica (Santa Clara) before allowing the only Harwich hit when Joe Sanders (Auburn) singled to center Field and Medica raced to third. Blair ended the brief threat by striking out Tim Smalling (Arkansas). The Kettleer ace retired the last 22 batters he faced. He’ll be in the West Division bullpen for Saturday’s All-Star Game in Chatham.

Harwich Mariners Defeat Cotuit Kettleers in CCBL Championship Finale at Whitehouse Field, 2-1

AUGUST 14, 2008 — There will always be a touch of irony when Cotuit fails to capture the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship.

If not for the simple fact that the Kettleers hold the record for most Cape League Championsip titles (14) - and 10 since the dawn of the modern era in 1963 - then simply because the Cape League Championship trophy is named for the father of the Cotuit Kettleers organization, Arnold Mycock.

The Harwich Mariners and their fans erupted in celebration last night in the bottom of the ninth inning when two runs crossed home plate on pinch-hitter Mark Fleury's two-strike, 390-foot single to centerfield, while the Kettleer faithful bowed their heads in unison and departed BFC Whitehouse Field. Summer had ended.

Tennessee southpaw Nick Hernandez, the league leader in games won this season, pitched arguably the greatest game of his career as he mowed down one Mariner after another through eight innings before giving up a leadoff triple in the bottom of the ninth. Stanford righty relief specialist Drew Storen came in and walked the first batter he faced, then battled pinch-hitter Fleury to a 1-2 count. It appeared Storen had Fleury struck out with a blazing fastball down the middle of the plate but the umpire called a ball. Fleury then fouled off the next pitch and then crushed Storen's next offering over centerfielder Brett Jackson's head for the game-winner. Cotuit finished at 26-20-2, field manager Mike Roberts' second best season in five years at the Cotuit helm.
