CAPE
COD, Mass. – Thirty-five players from all 10 franchises will represent
the Cape Cod Baseball League when they take on the U.S. Military
All-Stars as part of their 2006 Red, White and Blue Tour of America.
Presented
by Bank of America , the CCBL will host two exhibition
games: Saturday, June 10 at Veterans Field in Chatham at 7 p.m.
and Sunday, June 11 at Lowell Park in Cotuit at 4 p.m.
In
addition, the U.S. Military All-Stars will host a free children's
baseball clinic on Saturday, June 10 at Veterans Field in Chatham
from 1-3 p.m. and again Sunday, June 11 at McKeon Park in Hyannis
from 12-2 p.m. Both clinics are sponsored by Bank of America.
Chatham
A's field manager John Schiffner will coach the
CCBL squad during the game at Veterans Field, while Cotuit Kettleers'
skipper Mike Roberts will manage the CCBL squad
for the second game at Lowell Park.
The
CCBL squad includes five local players from Cape Cod: 2005 Big East
Player of the Year Jared McGuire (Boston College)
of Harwich and the Hyannis Mets, the Wheaton duo of catcher Adam
LaPlante of Harwich and
Jake Yagjian of Brewster, who are both temp players
for the Brewster Whitecaps and former Barnstable standouts
Matt Costello (Iona) of the Cotuit Kettleers and Rich
Tri (Central Conn.) of the Chatham A's.
“We've
had tremendous support from everyone in the Cape League to put together
this team in a hurry,” said CCBL Deputy Commissioner Sol Yas. “Many
thanks to John Wylde for running the CCBL Tryout in Wareham and
the GM's and field managers for their assistance.”
The
U.S. Military All-Stars (18-2) return to action Tuesday (6/6) at
Point Loma Nazarene University against the U.S. Marine Corps before
beginning the Red, White and Blue Tour of America in Boston Friday
night against the Yawkey Baseball League.
The
All-Stars return to the Cape League for a two-game series over the
weekend before continuing south to North Carolina for
a five-game series against the Coastal Plain League.
The
purpose of the Tour is to "Promote the Awareness of All Americans
in Support of the Honorable Sacrifices our Armed Forces Make at
the Tip of the Spear"
Three
players from the U.S. Military roster have been deployed for active
duty in Iraq and will not accompany the team to Cape Cod .
Now
in its 17 th season, this historic U.S. Military program has had
over 20,000 active duty and reserve personnel participate. Based
in San Diego and recognized as the fastest growing, largest and
only “Joint” armed forces baseball organization in the world, they
feature players from all branches of the military.
Since
1990, there have been over 30 military teams formed in all service,
and the U.S. Military All-Stars serve as the organizational model
worldwide. In 2005, as in previous years when our country is at
war, over 90 percent of the players have served one or more tours
in Iraq or Afghanistan. For this reason, U.S. Military players and
staff personally cover their own expenses.
To
support their efforts here in the U.S., the Military All-Stars execute
an extensive travel schedule of mare than 150 public appearances
in support of charities that help our veterans. Their team has compiled
a 520-194 overall record of .728 against professional, semi-pro,
and collegiate teams.
In
2006, the Military All-Stars compete against some of the finest
pro and NCAA-sanctioned summer collegiate organizations in the nation
during its 46-game “Red, White and Blue Tour of America” including
the CCBL, Golden, Southwest Pacific, Semiprofessional, New England
Collegiate, California Collegiate, Coastal Plain, Atlantic, Central
Plain, Western, and Semiprofessional Baseball Leagues and the Horizon
Summer Series.
“Thanks to the entire Cape Cod community for helping make this a
very special weekend for our U.S. Combined Military All-Star team,”
said USN Lt. Commander Terry Allvord, General Manager.
“The generosity of the Cape Cod Baseball
League, Diamond Baseball and Barnstable Bat Company to help offset
the expenses to our personnel, especially our lower ranking players,
is greatly appreciated. I am deeply humbled by the true spirit of
our personnel and Americans like the people in the Cape League who
work within an organization with the willingness to work harder
and the confidence to support our unique vision throughout the United
States to help us accomplish our mission in 2006.”
The
CCSOS and Boy Scout Dylan DeSilva will collect items for care packages
to be sent to U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq during
both games, which will include pre-game festivities that will honor
the U.S. Armed Forces. View www.capecod4thetroops.com
for a list of items needed, such as snack food packs, eye drops
and current magazines.
The Cotuit Kettleers will donate gate proceeds from
their game at Lowell Park. These funds will be donated to CCSOS
and used to purchase "Quick Clot" bandages for U.S.
soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

U.S. MILITARY TEAM OFF TO GREAT START
The U.S. Military All-Stars, who play in Chatham on June 10 at 7
p.m. and in Cotuit on June 11 at 4 p.m. against a team of Cape League
players, have compiled an 11-1 record. The Military team has won
nine straight games as they prepare for the 2006 Red, White and
Blue Tour of America. Armed Forces baseball has been traced back
to the Civil War (1861-1865) and flourished over the years with
servicemen such as MLB Hall of Famers Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb
and Grover Cleveland Alexander performing during World War I and
Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller and Hank Greenberg during
WWII. Now, over a century after its origin, our national pastime
marches on with over 30 organized military teams competing worldwide
modeled after the largest, most successful and only “Joint”
military program here in the “Modern Era.” To learn
more about the All-Stars as they make their way to the Cape, visit
them on the Web at www.usmilitaryallstars.us.
