BOURNE
- It was the second time the Kettleers needed late night heroics at
Doran Park to beat the Bourne Braves. This time it all started with the
newest addition to the Kettleers lineup, Krey Bratson (Texas A&M).
Trailing by one with no outs, Bratson struck out but reached on a
dropped 3rd strike that got by catcher Patrick Cantwell (Stony Brook).
The next batter was Micah Johnson (Indiana) who dropped down a bunt
that advanced Bratson to second. Then Logan Vick stepped to the dish
and dropped down another bunt. The ball was picked up by Braves pitcher
RJ Alvarez (Florida Atlantic) who thought he had looked Bratson back at
third. Bratson however had other thoughts. He took a few steps towards
third and, when Alvarez turned to throw to first, Bratson took off
running for home and scored to tie the game. Then Kevin Mager (Rollins)
reached on a single. Next up was Sefan Sabol (Oregon). Sabol launched a
shot to deep center field that rung off the top of the fence and
dropped for a double. Mager scored the winning run on the play for the
Kettleers.
“All
game I had been looking for a ball up in the zone to drive and Coach
Roberts had been telling me to look for a ball up and in that situation
he left a ball up and I tried to put a good swing on it and luckily it
went,” Sabol explained.
For
the bottom half of the ninth Kettleers fans were electric as lights-out
closer Bobby Wahl (Mississippi) came to the mound. Although Wahl did
get his 4th save of the year, it was a little harrier then Kettleers
fans are used to.
“I
wasn’t locating my fastball real well tonight, left a couple over the
plate. Kyle Farmer hit a good line drive off of me. I left the ball
over the plate, that was the big thing from me tonight I was leaving
balls over the plate. On that last batter I just tried to get a ground
ball for a double play and Micah and Mager turned it,” said Wahl
It
was another great start from Chris Beck (Georgia Southern) who went 7
⅔, gave up no earned on 7 hits, and struck out 5. The five strikes for
Beck put him 4th in the league with 24. Beck looked great but didn’t
get the win.
“I
felt good, found the zone pretty well, threw a lot of strikes, a couple
errors here and there, but it turned out well in the end,” said Beck.
It
was an all-around good game from the Kettleers who seemed to be able to
manufacture runs for the first time all year. With the win Cotuit was
fortunate enough to gain a game on three of the western division teams,
since both the Gatemen and Commodores lost last night. The
Kettleers, now 6-12-1, still sit in last place trailing Wareham (9-9-0), Bourne (8-8-2) and Falmouth (9-10-0) each by 5 points.
Gaining
in the standings was huge for the Kettleers. With back-to-back games
against division foe Falmouth, Cotuit tries to make jumps in the
standings, but according to coach Roberts doing so won’t be easy.
“It
will be tough. They’re hot. They may be the hottest team in the league.
We just send out hopefully good pitching. The key to this club is good
defense and our defense needs to improve and if it does you’ll see us
in the win column more often.” says Roberts.
On
Sunday the Kettleers come home for a 5:00 start and then travel to
Falmouth on the 4th for a 5:30 start against the Commodores. |
