Lowell
Park Renovation Underway
COTUIT,
MA — The first phase of the long-term Lowell Park Renovation
Plan began today with the demolition of the circa-1960 cement
block press box behind the home plate backstop, thus ushering
in the construction of a new $100,000 press box and chain link
backstop.
The date for the demolition of the backstop
has not yet been set but portions of it may be mounted and sold
as memorabilia keepsakes for Cotuit Kettleer fans in an effort
to offset the cost of construction.
Cotuit Kettleers Vice President and Lowell
Park Building Committee Chairman Paul Logan, Field Project Supervisor
Rodney Ames, Field Management Director Ward Dunning, General Manager
Bruce Murphy, Kettleers President Martha Johnston, GM Emeritus
Arnold Mycock, Clyde Takala and many more. Grover & McElheny
Custom Builders, Inc. of Mashpee have been contracted to build
the new pressbox. Archi-Tech Associates, Inc. of Cotuit is the
architect.
According to Mycock, the backstop was first
erected in 1959. The press box was built between 1964 and 1966.
Future
renovations to Lowell Park will include new handicapped accessible
rest room facilities, bleachers, an expanded Kettleers Store and
much more.
The Cotuit Kettleers have played at Lowell
Park and in the Cape Cod Baseball League since 1947. The 2004
season will mark the team’s 58th. The Cotuit Kettleers are sponsored
by the Cotuit Athletic Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
