Southard
Shines At Plate for Big Green Wave Victory
GREENVILLE,
N.C. - Senior right-hander Cory Hahn struck out seven and scattered
six hits in a complete-game effort, and sophomore centerfielder
Nathan Southard went 3- for-5
with a home run and a pair of RBI as the Tulane University won its
first-ever Conference USA opening series with a 9-0 victory over
East Carolina at Harrington Field.
The Green Wave got off to a good start with
three runs in the first, and that would be all Hahn would need in
his second career complete-game victory. Hahn's complete-game shutout
marks the first time a Tulane pitcher shutout an opponent since
game three of the 2002 Popeyes Cup when Kris Kline blanked UNO,
7-0 on April 23.
The win, combined with Saturday's 14-10 11-inning
thriller, also marked the first time since March 15-17, 2002 - a
span of 10 weekend series - that a visitor came into Greenville
to defeat the Pirates in a three-game series. Tulane improved to
15-7 overall and 2-1 in C-USA play, while East Carolina fell to
18-5 on the year and 1-2 in league action.
Southard
got things started for the Green Wave with a leadoff single, and
Tulane loaded the bases when junior second baseman Joe Holland reached
on an error and senior catcher Brian Bormaster hit a bunt single
that got past starting pitcher Ricky Brooks. From there, junior
left fielder Matt Barket drew an RBI-walk, sophomore right fielder
Brian Bogusevic followed with an RBI-single and junior first baseman
drove in a run on a double-play ball to put Tulane ahead 3-0.
The Green Wave had runners in scoring position
both in the second and fourth innings, only to leave them stranded,
but Tulane followed its first-inning script in the fifth Holland
and Barket sandwiched singles around Bormaster getting hit by pitch
to load the bases with nobody out. A balk by Brooks gave Tulane
a 4-0 lead, and Dini drove in a pair with a two-RBI up the middle
off of reliever Shane Mathews for a 6-0 advantage.
Southard
would make it 7-0 with a two-out, solo bomb in the sixth, and following
a scoreless seventh, Southard ripped an RBI single to left in the
top of the eighth and Holland followed with a run-scoring double
to account for the final score.
Hahn, meanwhile, never gave up more than one
hit in any inning. The lone time he allowed two Pirates to reach
base in the same stanza came in the ninth when he hit pinch hitter
Mike Grace with two outs and Mike Harrington reached on an error,
but the crafty senior put an exclamation point on his performance
by striking out Adam Witter to end the game.
