Marek throws in the low 90s with a tight breaking ball.

As a freshman for the Gators in 2004, he posted a 2-0 record to go along with a 0.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts after making two relief appearances, which spanned 10.1 innings, during the 2004 Junior College World Series. He helped lead San Jacinto to a runner-up national finish, while claiming JUCO World Series Most Outstanding Pitcher honors. The right-hander was selected in the 40th round of the 2004 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Anaheim Angels (No. 1193 overall).

Following his outstanding freshman season, Marek played in the Jayhawk Summer League, where he was named the fourth best prospect in the league by the Baseball America magazine.
