FALMOUTH,
MA — Cotuit
picked up its first loss of the season as they were unable to figure
out Falmouth pitching in a five to one loss. Starting pitcher Dan
Sattler (Purdue, 1 BB, 5 K, 9 H) pitched five tough innings, but
picked up his first loss of the season as Falmouth was able to strike
first in the third inning. Ryan Annetsberger (Illinois State, 1
for 4, 1 RBI) doubled to bring in Warren McFadden (Tulane, 2 for
4) for the first run of the game, which gave Falmouth a lead that
they wouldn't relinquish. Matt Nuzzo (Brown, 1 for 4, 2 RBI) then
hit his second home run of the season to put Falmouth up by three
and provide the Commodores with all the run security they would
need.
Cory
Luebke (Ohio, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 H) pitched six brilliant innings for
the Commodores as he picked up his first victory of the season and
completely shut down the Cotuit attack. The Kettleers weren't able
to seriously threaten the Commodores until Shooter Hunt (Virginia,
2 BB, 2 K, 2 H) entered as a pitcher in the seventh inning. Cotuit
led off the inning with two straight hits and Eric Farris (Loyola
Marymount, 1 SB) entered as a pitch runner for Wilson Tucker (Belmont,
1 for 3) to put added pressure on the Commodores. Hunt though, was
able to limit the damage as only Farris was able to score off of
a put-out by Sean Gaston (Notre Dame, 0 for 4, 1 RBI). Cotuit wasn't
going to go down quietly though as they kept the pressure on Falmouth
by loading the bases in the eighth inning.
Hunt
again got himself into trouble in the eighth inning by loading the
bases off of two singles and a walk. Cory Riordan (Fordham, 1 K)
was called upon to get the last out and he was able to accomplish
this by striking out Kyle Russell (Texas, 1 for 4) to end the inning.
That turned out to be Cotuit's last gasp as after Falmouth added
another run in the bottom of the eight, Cotuit batters went down
in order in the bottom of the ninth to give Falmouth the victory.
Hopefully Cotuit can recover their hitting prowess as they look
to earn their first road victory of the season against Wareham tonight
at 7:00 p.m. at Clem Spillane Field.
