FALMOUTH, MA -- The Cotuit Kettleers (13-10-1) may have made a statement
last night at Elmer "Guv" Fuller FIeld, as the team notched
its second straight shutout victory in Western Division play, and
its second straight win in as many days.
The win came thanks to the strong pitching of
Notre Dame's Jeff Manship (1-2) and a game-winning home run by LSU's
Bryan Harris. The win was Manship's first Cape League victory and
the home run added to Harris's growing list of RBI at 19.
Manship tossed seven innings of shutout ball,
gave up just two hits and walked three. Falmouth's Dallas Buck (Oregon
State, 10 Ks, 0 BBs) was equally impressive, allowing just one hit
over seven innings, but that one hit was all that it took to put
the Commodores in an early hole. In the second inning, Bryan Harris
(Cal State Fullerton, 1-4, HR, RBI) led off the inning with a home run
that just made it over the left field fence.
The home run would prove to be the game-winner
as the pitching for Cotuit managed their second shut out in a row
as they constantly kept the Commodores hitters off-balance.
Manship was only seriously threatened
in the fourth inning when he had runners on first and third with
only one out. He then proceeded to strike out the next two batters,
ending the threat, which was the last one he faced. Even though
the pitching wouldn't need more runs, Cotuit, who has come to like
the later innings of the game, added some insurance runs in the
seventh and eigth innings.
Roberto Lopez (USC, 1-1 batting, RBI), a pinch
hitter for J.P Padron (LSU), batted in Todd Davison (Delaware) for
the second run of the inning against reliever Chris Krawczyk (SW
Missouri St, 2 Ks, 1 BB), who up until this game hadn't allowed
a single earned run. Brad Boyer (Arizona, 1-4 batting, RBI) then
supplied the rest of the scoring in the eigth when he doubled in
Sean Gaston (Notre Dame) and then reached home on a wild pitch by
reliever Steve MacFarland (Lamar, 2 Ks, 1 BB).
Chris Toneguzzi (Purdue, 2 Ks, 0
BB) came on in the ninth, but was not eligible for a save because
Cotuit was leading by four runs when he entered the game. Cotuit
heads to Orleans tonight (7-14-05).
