HYANNIS, MA -- Josh Johnson (Mississippi St, 7 Ks, 1 BB) pitched
brilliantly, taking control of the game from the very beginning
as he allowed only one run to in an effort to snap Cotuit's three-game
losing streak in a 7-1 win over cross-town rival Hyannis.
Joshnson threw 107 pitches in his seven innings,
only facing serious trouble in the second inning when he allowed
the Mets to tie the game up at 1-1. After that, the Kettleers seized
control of the game as their bats came to life, giving Johnson his
team-leading third victory of the season.
Brad
Boyer (Arizona, 3-5 batting, 2 RBI) jump-started the Kettleers as
he hit a lead-off home run, his first of the season, against losing
pitcher Adrian Alaniz (Texas, 3 Ks, 2 BBs) to give Cotuit a 1-0
lead.
The Mets responded in the second inning as Mark
McGonigle (Houston, 1-3, RBI) signled to bring in the tying run,
which was his sixth RBI of the season. After this inning though,
the Hyannis attack fizzled, allowing Cotuit to take right back the
momentum in the third inning.
Michael Hollander (LSU, 2-4 batting) hit
his team-leading fifth double of the season to start the third inning
off for the Kettlers, and he was quickly brought in off of the game-winning
RBI by Todd Davison (Delaware, 1-4 batting, RBI), who continued
his hot hitting. Bryan Harris (Cal State Fullerton, 2-4 batting,
RBI) also sustained his clutch hitting as he singled and drove in
his 20th RBI of the season.
The third run of the inning was then added when
Harris stole second base, and because no one was covering second,
the throw from the catcher went into the outfield, allowing Harris
to score to give the Kettleers a comfortable four to one lead.
Cotuit continued to add to its lead
as Devin Thomas (Brown, 1-3 batting, 2 RBI) doubled in two more
runs in the fifth, which made it very unlikely that the Kettleers
would fall to any comeback attempted by the Mets. Nathan Culp (Missouri)
and Derik Olvey (Notre Dame) closed out the game for the Kettleers,
giving Cotuit a much needed win that pushed them over the .500 mark
on the season. Hopefully this is a sign that the Kettleers are ready
to go on a winning streak as they look to move up in the standings.
