COTUIT,
MA — It
was a tightly contested contest for most of the game, but Cotuit's
bats exploded in the bottom of the eighth inning for a seventeen
to one trouncing of the Orleans Cardinals, which allowed them to
remain undefeated at Lowell Park . The beginning of the game started
out promising for the Cardinals as they struck first in the second
inning against Cotuit starting pitcher Shane Mathews ( East Carolina
, 2 BB, 3 K, 3 H). Joe Dunigan ( Oklahoma , 0 for 4) reached base
on an error by the shortstop Tony Delmonico ( Tennessee , 3 for
5, 2 RBI) and then scored on Joe Mahoney's ( Richmond , 1 for 4,
1 RBI) single. This was the only run that the Cardinals were able
to score though, as Mathews stifled their attack for the next four
innings, allowing his offence to regain the lead for him, which
gave him his first victory of the season.
Cotuit
didn't take long to counter the run scored by Orleans as they responded
right away in the bottom of the inning by scoring two runs off of
David Coulon ( Arizona , 2 BB, 4 K, 5 H) to give the Kettleers a
lead they wouldn't relinquish. Delmonico singled with one out and
then Sean Gaston (Notre Dame, 4 for 4, 2 RBI) doubled to bring him
in for the tying run. Reese Havens (South Carolina, 3 for 5, 6 RBI),
who in his first game playing for the Kettleers had a great day
at the plate, singled for his first RBI and the deciding run of
the game. In the third, Gaston added another run for the Kettleers
with his second double in the game to bring in Kellen Kulbacki (James
Madison, 2 for 4). After the third inning, it appeared that the
game was going to be a low scoring affair due to the solid pitching
by both teams, but the Orleans pitchers lost control in the eighth
inning, leading to an offensive explosion on the part of the Kettleers
to turn what had been a close game into a blow-out.
The
eighth inning saw three Cardinals pitchers face seventeen Cotuit
batters, who had thirteen hits and fourteen runs in just this one
inning. Reese Havens actions at the plate made quite a statement
to the home crowd in his Cape Cod debut as in the eighth inning
alone he hit two homeruns to give him five RBI's for the inning
and six for the game. Cotuit bats were again explosive at their
home park where they remain undefeated for the season, but tomorrow
they leave the comfy confines of Lowell Park to visit the Bourne
Braves where the Kettleers hope to keep their hot hitting going.
