Incoming Kettleers' Sluggers Are Red Hot

Wieters and Jordan Have Banner Days on Diamond

Wieters Named ACC Player of the Week for Georgia Tech

March 6, 2005

DeLand, Fla. -- Shane Jordan went 4-for-4 and Chris Johnson drove in four runs as Stetson thumped visiting Maine 13-2 Sunday afternoon at Melching Field.

The Hatters (9-5) used an eight-run sixth inning to power their way to the rubber game of the three-game series. Stetson won for the fifth time in its last six contests while the Black Bears fell to 3-4.

Chris Ingoglia (1-0) worked five scoreless innings to earn the victory in his first outing of the season. The Hatter sophomore worked out of trouble in each of the first three innings, but retired eight of the last nine batters he faced. He walked none and struck out five.

“I am very proud of the way we came back to win these last two games after a tough, tough loss on Friday night,” Hatter head coach Pete Dunn said. “We were very enthused with Chris’ outing. He threw strikes and didn’t walk anybody. He should be ready to go next weekend [at Georgia State].”

After a scoreless first two innings, the Hatters scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third. With runners at first and second, pitcher Greg Norton (1-1) threw wildly to third on a bunt attempt from Brandon Paritz. Brian Bocock and Shane Jordan each came around to score to give Stetson a 2-0 lead. Paritz would later score on an infield ground out by Chris Johnson.

The Hatters added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-0 lead.

Greg Creek hit his second home run of the series in the top of the sixth to pull Maine within 5-1.

Stetson broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson hit a three-run home run, his second of the year, to highlight the attack. Paritz also drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single.
Jordan had a double and three singles to lead the Hatters. Bocock went 3-for-4 and David Golliner went 2-for-3. Jordan, Bocock, Golliner, and Paritz, and John DeStefano each scored twice for Stetson.

Stetson is 9-5 on its season-opening 16-game homestand with two games remaining.

Wieters' Red Hot Bat Paces Georgia Tech Yellowjackets

Slugger named GA Tech & ACC Athlete-of-the-week
The ACC named Georgia Tech freshman Matt Wieters its Player of the Week yesterday (March 7), on the heels of a banner week for the Yellowjackets' slugger.

Wieters, a freshman from Goose Creek, S.C., went 13-for-17 (.765) with a home run and nine RBI to lead Georgia Tech to a perfect 4-0 record against Georgia Southern and Duke last week.

The switch hitter had a slugging percentage of 1.059 and posted an .800 on base percentage. He had two doubles, walked three times and added two sacrifice bunts.

After a 1-for-3 performance in a midweek 9-1 win over Georgia Southern, Wieters went 12-for-14 in Tech's three game sweep at Duke.

In the series finale on Sunday, he went a perfect 5-for-5 with a grand slam and six RBI. Wieters helped Tech extend its ACC regular season win streak to 19 games, two games shy of the ACC record.

Additionally, Wieters earned the win on Tuesday against Georgia Southern by working 3.2 innings of shutout relief.
