Cotuit Kettleers and Cape League Loses a Dear, Loyal Friend

For Immediate Release

March 22, 2007

OSTERVILLE, MA — Frank Finn, editor, publisher and founder of the Cape Cod Sports Report, passed away Saturday night, March 17 after a long and hard battle against liver and lung cancer.

The 59-year-old Finn covered college, high school and youth sports on the Cape for over 30 years, first as sports writer and sports editor of the Register and then sports editor of the Barnstable Patriot, before founding his own weekly publication, the Cape Cod Sports Report in the early 1990’s.

Finn and his wife Cathy were a two-person operation of the publication, writing and editing all the stories, taking photos, selling and placing advertisements and publishing and printing the final edition.

The Northeastern graduate, a Cape Cod native who attended Nauset, covered a wide range of athletics events over the years, from the Hyannis and Falmouth Sprint Traithlons at Criagville Beach (where he knew practically every local entry) to Little League baseball and softball and powder-puff football.

Finn covered the Cape Cod Baseball League for over 30 years and was the single biggest proponent of utilizing local college players in the nation’s top collegiate summer league. It was rather fitting that during the past two summers, Finn’s work behind the scenes aid off with several local performers on CCBL rosters.

The charismatic Finn worked every Sunday during the fall and winter for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Publicity Service Bureau from 1984-1999, selecting player of the week in football and men’s and women’s basketetball under the direction of Assistant Commissioners Connie Huston Hurlbut (in 1984-86) and then John Garner (in 1986-99) and co-director Geoff Converse.

Finn is the second former ECAC Service Bureau employee to pass away during the past year as Scott Sanford of Sagamore (son of CCBL Hall of Famer Jack Sanford and grandson of CCBL Hall of Famer Pat Sorenti) died last January at the age of 49 of a massive heart attack.

Finn leaves his wife Cathy, daughter Sarah, son Scotty, his mother, one brother, three sisters and several other family members.

He was one of a kind…

John Garner, CCBL
