BOSTON- The six Cotuit Kettleers selected to take part in last week’s Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game festivities at Fenway Park returned to the home of the Red Sox Thursday to be recognized during a ceremony prior to Boston’s afternoon game against the Oakland A’s.
Red sox pitcher and former Cape Leaguer Justin Masterson (Wareham 2005) greeted the All-Stars as they assembled along the first and third base lines. Cotuit’s Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington), Zack Cox (Arkansas), Zach Cone (Georgia), Cameron Rupp (Texas), Kevin Patterson (Auburn), and Daniel Tillman (Florida Southern), as well as manager Mike Roberts were introduced to the Fenway crowd of 37,919.
Cox was named MVP of the rain shortened All-Star Game after going 2-for-3 with a triple and a base hit. Along with Yarmouth-Dennis pitcher Chris Sale (Florida Gulf Coast), MVP of the Eastern Division squad, the two received an appreciative ovation from teammates, coaches, family, host families, team personnel and fans seated in the center field bleacher seats.
Six Red Sox players that developed their talent in the Cape League took the field in Thursday’s game, as well as former Boston shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, now playing for the A’s. Infielders Kevin Youkilis (Bourne 2000) and Mike Lowell (Chatham 1994), catcher Jason Varitek (1991,1993), outfielders Jacoby Ellsbury (Falmouth 2004), and Jason Bay (Chatham 1999), and reliever Daniel Bard (Wareham 2005) all contributed to Boston’s 8-5 come from behind win. Pitching coach John Farrell played for Hyannis in 1982. Ellsbury is the only former Cape League player on the Red Sox that was not selected to a Cape League All-Star team.
Ellsbury made a diving catch on a shallow pop fly in the third inning to rob Oakland’s Rajai Davis of a base hit. Bard served as the set-up man for closer Jonathan Papelbon and touched 101 MPH on the park’s radar gun with his fastball. Varitek had a three RBI day at the plate.
Along with Garciaparra, the A’s have two former Cape League players on their active roster- infielder Adam Kennedy (Falmouth 1996), and pitcher Brad Ziegler (Chatham 2001, Harwich 2002).
