Dominant Pitching Silences Kettleers Bats; Hyannis wins 4-3

HYANNIS – Ryan Gibson (Oklahoma) entered the game for the Harbor Hawks in the fourth inning with a one run lead, and shut down the Kettleers offense. Gibson walked the first batter he faced but got Kevin Mager (Rollins) to ground into a double play. Gibson walked Logan Vick (Baylor) and then gave up a hit to Patrick Biondi (Michigan). Biondi’s hit was the only one Gibson would allow in his 5 2/3 innings of work. Starting in the 5th Gibson sat down 11 in a row, and 13 of the 15 he faced. Gibson made it impossible for the Kettleers to score the tying run. “I was just trying to attack and throw as many strikes as I could. My change-up was working as well as I wanted it to but I had better command over my curveball and slider tonight.” said Ryan Gibson of his night.

For the third night in a row the Kettleers faced off with cross-town rivals the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. The winner of the season series will take home the Barnstable Patriot Cup, currently held by the Kettleers. The Kettleers took the first game, and the Harbor Hawks took the second. The Harbor Hawks had no intention of dropping the third.

“I’m not gonna say the Patriots not a big deal but what’s a big deal is winning the division and that’s why it’s big to beat Cotuit. We know Cotuit’s gonna be there at the end so we have to beat them when we can,” said head Coach Chad Gassman.

The Kettleers got of to a great start. Kyle Wren (Georgia Tech) hit a lead-off double and scored two batters later when Victor Roache (Georgia Southern) grounded out to short.

Hyannis called and raised the Kettleers by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Joey Rickard (Arizona) hit a triple that scored Eric Stamets (Evansville). Rickard scored two batters later when Joey DeMichele (Arizona State) hit a pop fly.

Cody Stubbs (Walters State CC) gave the Kettleers a lead with a home run to right field. Stubbs got ahead in the count and sent the ball for a ride for his first home run of the year.

“I was looking for a pitch up in the zone and he left a change-up and luckily he left it up and I got to drive it,” said Stubbs of his home run.

Stubbs also had an unassisted double play on a line-drive that he caught and stepped on first before the runner came back to tag.

The Kettleers loss is their 11th of the year, and second in a row.

Cotuit travels to Fenway Park today for scouts day. Then they are back to business tomorrow against Wareham at Lowell Park.
