Healy’s Blast Gives Kettleers Second Win in a Row

Post-game Interviews: Kevin Ziomek, Ryon Healy, Coach Mike Roberts
July 5, 2011

COTUIT – Ryon Healy (Oregon) had a Cape League career night at the plate against the Bourne Braves. Healy went 2 for 3 on the day, including a 3 run homer in the 1st. The peak of Healy’s game was described as the best Kettleers at bat of the year. Healy forced Braves pitcher Brian Ward (UConn) to throw 10 pitches before he launched one over the left field fence. “I’ve been trying to work a lot on my swing lately with coach Roberts on keeping my legs low and, even though I feel like I took a lot of ugly swings at that bat but I got a good pitch to hit and I handled it well,” said Healy of his at bat.

To say the bats came alive in this game would be an understatement. The Kettleers posted 11 runs over 6 innings, production that had been unseen so far from the Kettleers.

“When you get the longball going early in the game, particularly a 3 run home run, it helps you relax a little,” said Coach Mike Roberts of his team’s production.

In addition to Healy’s home run Victor Roache (Georgia Southern) added a solo shot of his own in the third. Roache’s hit looked almost like a high routine fly ball that just kept on going and finally left Lowell Park as a towering shot.

“I got the ball up in the wind. I think the wind helped me today but I got it up there and it went out,” described Victor Roache.

Newcomer and starting pitcher for the day was Kevin Ziomek (Vanderbilt) had a solid day on the hill. Ziomek went only 4 innings but gave up no earned on just 2 hits and struck out 4 to shut down the Braves’ bats. Ziomek got the win in his first start as a Kettleer.

Ziomek’s first day was also the first day for one of his teammates at Vanderbilt, a teammate who brought a lot of buzz to to Lowell Park that evening. Mike Yastrzemski (Vanderbilt) got his first at bat of the season as well. Yastrzemski is the grandson of Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski. The younger Yastrzemski went 1 for 2 and hit a grounder for a single in his first at bat. Yastrzemski hit .250 for the Kettleers in 2010.

Keenen Kish (Florida) also got his Kettleers debut against the Braves. Kish pitched 2 full and gave up 1 earned on 2 hits and struck out just one.

The earned run came in the 8th with just one DJ Hicks (Central Florida) swing of the bat. Hicks sent one deep to right that soared over the head of Torston Boss (Michigan State) and the fence for the Braves’ first run.

The Braves would score again in the ninth but the Kettleers were too much to handle and the final tally was 11-2.

Despite the back-to-back in-division wins the Kettleers, now 8-13-1,  still sit in last place in the West, just 3 points behind the Braves (9-10-2) and Gatemen (10-11-0).

The Orleans Firebirds come to Lowell Park on Tuesday the 6th at 5:00 holding a 10-9-2 record and sitting in third place in the east. The Kettleers look to make it 3 in a row.
