Behind a poor pitching performance, highlighted by five four-pitch walks and 10 walks total, the Cotuit Kettleers (1-5) dropped its Thursday night game to the Orleans Firebirds (4-2), 6-5, at Lowell Park.
Keith Rogalla (Creighton) got the start for Cotuit, and he lasted three and two-thirds innings. Rogalla gave up four runs on four hits, all earned.
He was backed up in the bottom of the third by five Kettleer runs, thanks to two errors from the Firebirds, which put Cotuit ahead, 5-4.
The inning was highlighted by a play which saw Greyson Jenista (Wichita State) ground to the pitcher with runners on first and third. As Jenista ran to first, Orleans pitcher Sean Guenther (Notre Dame) hesitated, eventually overthrowing first base and allowing two runs to score behind the error.
From there, Aaron Maher (East Tennessee State) followed in relief, lasting 2.1 innings and allowing one run on one hit. The run was earned. Maher has typically played outfield this season for Cotuit, and it was his first pitching appearance of the season.
Dave Gerber (Creighton) followed Maher, allowing two runs, one earned, in one inning pitched. Gerber took the loss.
The Cotuit offense slowed after the third inning, with the Kettleers unable to put any more runs on the board, finally falling 6-5. Orleans had three errors in the loss, Cotuit had two, and just one Cotuit baserunner reached base via walk.
