The Cotuit Kettleers (15-11-2) won their third straight game with a 5-0 victory over the Bourne Braves (10-16) at Doran Park on Saturday night.

ABC’s

C is for Casey: ‘Mighty Casey’ was the one striking batters out Saturday as Casey Schmitt

Schmitt pitches at Bourne

(San Diego State) had another special performance at Bourne. With the way Schmitt has pitched in clutch situations, coming onto the mound from third base rather than the bullpen, he has proven Coach Roberts right seemingly time and again.

In the majority of his relief performances Schmitt has come in with runners in scoring position, showing how much trust Roberts has in Schmitt’s mental make-up. He came into this one in the sixth with runners on first and second and just one out. He retired the next two batters to get Cotuit safely out of the inning with a 2-0 lead. Schmitt continued to impress with his pitching throughout the night as he would maintain the shutout, striking out five and closing out the game for his third save of the season.

Schmitt also showed off his hot bat with a 3-5 performance including a double that increased his average to .276. His batting average is especially eye-opening considering his average was under .200 just over a week ago.

F is for Four Over: The Kettleers have moved four games over .500 for the first time in the 2019 season as Cotuit has now won three in a row for the second time. Cotuit (32 points) is now just one point behind the division leading Gatemen and just two points behind the league-leading Chatham Anglers.

M is for McCambley: Zachary McCambley (Coastal Carolina) was lights out in his fifth start for the Kettleers, earning his first Cotuit win. McCambley went 5 and a third innings, recording seven strikeouts while surrendering 0 runs. McCambley really brought the heat, reaching an individual season high of 95 miles per hour on the radar gun. The 6-2 righty hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of his five starts and now has a very stingy ERA of 1.74.

McCambley hurls it home

O is for Oviedo: Adam Oviedo (Oral Roberts) has been a mainstay for the Kettleers at short. On Saturday he displayed his offensive talents as well. Oviedo knocked in two of Cotuit’s five runs with hard-hit singles including a hit drilled down the left field line in the third that put the Kettleers ahead early. The starting shortstop extended his hit-streak to four games in this one.

S is for Scoreless: Cotuit’s pitching has simply been special dating back to Wednesday’s victory against Falmouth. Since the fourth inning of that game the Kettleers pitchers haven’t allowed a run in twenty-three and two thirds innings. Pitchers Sean Sullivan (California Berkeley), Bo Hofstra (Purdue), Kyle Nicolas (Ball State), Reid Johnston (North Carolina State), Matt Mervis (Duke), McCambley, and Schmitt have simply shut down the competition.

Next Up

Cotuit’s pitching staff will have a tough task keeping up the scoreless streak on Sunday as they host the Orleans Firebirds (14-11-2) who are fresh off a 15-3 thumping of Yarmouth-Dennis. First pitch is set for 5 PM at Lowell Park.
