Game 1: Wareham Gatemen at Cotuit Kettleers
Where: Lowell Park
When: Sunday 6/20, 5:00 PM
Probable Cotuit starter: Justin Meis (Eastern Michigan)
The Cotuit Kettleers will start their title defense on Sunday evening. The Cape Cod League returns to action for the first time in nearly two full years today. The Kettleers open the 2021 season with the Wareham Gatemen, a West Division rival. Wareham and Cotuit were both playoff teams in 2019. The Kettleers took down the Gatemen in the division semifinals to start a run to their 17th CCBL Championship.
Mike Roberts is making his return to Lowell Park for his 17th season as Cotuit’s head coach. Roberts has managed the Kettleers to three league titles.
Justin Meis (Eastern Michigan) will get the opening day start for the Kettleers. Meis tossed a 1-2-3 inning with one strikeout against the Lexington Blue Sox on Thursday in an exhibition game. Meis is a junior out of Eastern Michigan and is a native of Pittsburgh. The right-handed pitcher led Eastern Michigan with 13 starts and 73.2 innings pitched this spring. Meis also led the Eagles with 81 strikeouts.
The Kettleers’ lineup is highlighted by a potent outfield. John Rhodes (Kentucky) showed off easy power with two home runs in Thursday’s exhibition. RJ Schreck (Duke) crushed a no-doubt home run of his own over the right field fence. Dylan Beavers (California) doubled twice, one to each gap. All three outfielders had 11+ home runs in the spring.
Our public address announcer Roy Reiss collaborated with our 2021 media team on a hype video to get you prepped for the Kettleers’ return tour. The quest for 18 begins today.
