Cotuit, MA – The Cotuit pitching staff only allowed four hits in Saturday’s contest, but gave Brewster 12 free passes en route to a 7-3 loss. The Kettleers lineup outhit the Whitecaps seven to four, but were unable to put together any rallies to start a big inning. Coach Mike Roberts criticized himself for tonight’s game, saying that he “lacked confidence in a couple situations” and “didn’t execute enough.”
Moments that mattered:
Gold’s blast puts Cotuit on the board
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Kettleers were down 2-0 and looking for a spark. Luke Gold (Boston College) stepped up to the plate and cut the Brewster lead in half on one swing, belting a no doubt home run into the Cotuit Bullpen. The blast was Gold’s fourth homer of the year, and his first since June 25th.
Roberts evens game with pinch hit double
Brett Roberts (Florida State) entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on third and two outs. Roberts made his plate appearance count, slicing a double down the right-field line to tie the game. The Florida State product was hustling out of the box and was able to slide into second base for a double. The hit gave the Kettleers nation a lot of hope as the game was coming down to the wire.
Cotuit pitchers can’t find zone
It was a night to forget for the Kettleers pitching staff, as five pitchers combined to walk 12. “We looked at the board and Brewster had just four hits, but we gave them 12 walks” said Coach Roberts who seems to be flushing away tonight’s performance. The sixth inning is what hurt the Kettleers the most, as the Whitecaps put up four runs on two hits and four free passes.
Nathan Martorella (California): 2-3
Brett Roberts (California): 1-2, RBI
Trevor Kuncl (George Washington): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 K
The Kettleers will travel to Bourne tomorrow night to take on the Braves. “We all put our pants on the same way and breathe the same air, we are not scared of anybody” said Coach Roberts about the matchup with first place Bourne. The game will be played at 6:00 PM at Bourne’s Doran Park.
