Cotuit, MA– The Kettleers could never form a rhythm on Saturday evening, losing 9-4 to western division rival Falmouth. The Commodores banged 11 hits off Cotuit pitching, and put together four separate two run innings en route to a convincing win in six innings.
Cotuit (12-15) and Falmouth are now tied for second in the western division behind Bourne. “Fundamentals” is the mantra that Coach Mike Roberts is preaching to this Kettleers team as the playoffs approach. “We just have to polish our skills” said Roberts, who called this year’s situation “one of the biggest challenges” of his career in Cotuit.
Moments that mattered:
Falmouth puts up two in back-to-back innings
After Cotuit took a one run lead in the bottom of the first, Falmouth immediately responded by scoring two runs in each of the next two innings. In the second, the first three Commodores that came to the plate all got on base, two by way of hits, and one on an error. Now up 2-1, Falmouth kept the foot on the gas pedal in the third. With a runner on, Falmouth first basemen Kristofer Armstrong belted a no-doubt homer to put the Commodores up 4-1. The two inning stretch proved to be all that Falmouth needed, as they were able to keep the Kettleers offense at bay.
Maitland gets out of jam
Down 6-2 in the top of the fifth, the Kettleers got into a bases loaded jam with no outs. Logan Maitland (UMass-Dartmouth) hunkered down to finish the inning, striking out two and forcing a fly out to center for the third out. Maitland’s moment was one of the only highlights for Cotuit on the day.
Trice has perfect night at plate
Carter Trice (Old Dominion) was the catalyst for the Kettleers offense on Saturday, notching two hits and walking twice. His night was capped off by a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to pull Cotuit within five runs of the Falmouth lead. This was easily Trice’s best game on the cape thus far.
Luke Gold (Boston College): 1-2, RBI, 2B
Carter Trice (Old Dominion): 2-2, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB
Logan Maitland (UMass-Dartmouth): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2K
The Kettleers will travel to Wareham on Sunday to take on the Gatemen at 6:30 PM. Cotuit has won two straight against the Gatemen, both coming Spillane Field.
