History
The Cotuit Athletic Association takes pride in having the finest baseball diamond on Cape Cod. With the pristine setting and cozy confines of Lowell Park in the small village of Cotuit, the field itself is the most important facet of the Lowell Park property. The Cotuit Athletic Association has been the primary tenant of Lowell Park since the late 1940’s and has been the overseer and financial provider of capital projects and year-round maintenance since then. The Cotuit Athletic Association and the Town of Barnstable have worked with one-year and three-year agreements since the late 1950’s through the Town’s Recreation Division.
The Cotuit Athletic Association strives to provide the baseball fan with the total baseball experience and first class accommodations that the property can offer. In addition to the award-winning concession offerings and a state-of-the-art Press Box Building, the baseball diamond is the crowning glory. Many youth, high school, and community baseball teams use Lowell Park on a regular basis in addition to the CCBL Cotuit Kettleers. The Town of Barnstable is always seeking more use of parks and fields for residents and tourists. The Cotuit Athletic Association has been a good friend and partner with the Town of Barnstable for many years and Lowell Park has gladly hosted many baseball games and other community activities.
The Town of Barnstable has historically supported any and all capital improvements made by the Cotuit Athletic Association at Lowell Park, as budget constraints have made it more difficult to earmark public dollars for parks and fields. Cape Cod and the Town of Barnstable promote the CCBL as a destination for residents and tourists each and every summer and Lowell Park and the Cotuit Kettleers jointly strive to produce a winning team, both on and off the field. The Cotuit Athletic Association has performed year-round maintenance and capital improvements at Lowell Park for over 65 years and as a result has exclusive use of Lowell Park during the CCBL season. Lowell Park’s pristine appearance makes it a desirable venue for baseball games, youth baseball clinics, and other activities and is a virtual magnet for the community when it comes to hosting important baseball events.
Financial Sustainability
The Cotuit Athletic Association raises over $215,000 in revenue each year for operating expenses and minor capital improvements. Revenue for operating expenses is generated from an annual booster drive, merchandise sales, raffle proceeds, donations, etc. Annual revenues which exceed annual expenses are allocated to capital improvements, which typically amounts to about $9,000 per annum. The Cotuit Athletic Association conducts capital improvement fundraising campaigns on an ad hoc basis, yet the need is greater than ever. With increasingly varied capital improvement requirements, the financial sustainability of the Cotuit Athletic Association will be best served by an annual stream of revenue above and beyond what is typically raised each year.
The need for continued support for our capital projects from our many fans and the community becomes more and more urgent. The Cotuit Kettleers remain the ONLY Cape Cod Baseball League team to fully maintain its playing field and park without use of public funds.
Since 2004, the Cotuit Athletic Association has invested in a new press box building, a new infield, new first base bleachers, new backstop and fencing, and a new scoreboard with some help from the Yawkey Foundation. As funds allow, expansion of parking, new third-base grandstands, construction of new restrooms, and a new outfield will begin. If you would like to help out:
